Summary: The Equipment & Shop Manager manages daily shop, yard, fleet maintenance, and equipment-dispatch operations. This position ensures equipment, trucks, tools, and facilities are safe, organized, compliant, and ready to support field operations while anticipating project needs and minimizing downtime

 

Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Shop and Dispatch:

 

  • Manage daily shop and yard operations, including personnel, organization, housekeeping, tools, and inventory.
  • Dispatch equipment and trucks based on project needs and coordinate moves among job sites, yards, and vendors.
  • Prioritize competing requests and communicate equipment assignments or conflicts promptly.
  • Coordinate and track rental equipment to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Ensure facilities comply with company safety policies and applicable OSHA and environmental requirements.

 

Maintenance and Fleet Compliance:

 

  • Oversee preventive maintenance, repairs, and operational readiness of equipment, vehicles, and attachments.
  • Schedule repairs and order parts in advance to minimize downtime.
  • Create, track, and close B2W work orders with complete service notes, invoices, and cost information.
  • Manage inspections, registrations, permits, MVA transactions, accident reporting, and other fleet requirements.
  • Use Samsara to monitor equipment locations, utilization, and availability.
  • Maintain accurate equipment, maintenance, telematics, and compliance records.

 

Vendors and Purchasing:

 

  • Coordinate internal and third-party repairs and ensure work is timely, accurate, and cost-effective.
  • Maintain relationships with equipment dealers, rental providers, parts suppliers, and service vendors.
  • Assist with purchasing and setting up new equipment, attachments, and telematics systems.
  • Review invoices, purchase orders, and vendor setup in Viewpoint.

 

Field and Project Support:

 

  • Respond to equipment requests and resolve issues affecting field productivity.
  • Research equipment specifications and coordinate equipment familiarization when needed.
  • Visit job sites to assess equipment condition, utilization, safety, and upcoming needs.
  • Attend weekly scheduling meetings and review project look-aheads.
  • Report to the storage yard at 6:30 a.m. once per week and conduct at least one weekly job-site visit.

 

Financial and Capital Planning:

 

  • Work with Accounting on equipment costs, fixed assets, expenses, and financial processes.
  • Support capital planning by providing equipment condition, utilization, repair history, and cost data.
  • Gather vendor quotes, specifications, and lead times and present recommendations to leadership.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities involving repairs, rentals, utilization, and vendor services.

 

Communication and Supervision:

 

  • Maintain regular communication with the General Superintendent, Superintendents, project teams, shop personnel, and vendors.
  • Identify equipment shortages, conflicts, repair delays, and rental needs before they affect production.
  • Direct shop personnel, establish priorities, and reinforce expectations for safety, productivity, and equipment care.
  • Respond promptly to urgent equipment needs and after-hours emergencies.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or related degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of relevant equipment, fleet, shop, maintenance, or construction experience preferred.
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, preventive maintenance, and fleet compliance.
  • Experience with B2W, Viewpoint, Samsara, JJ Keller, or similar systems preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong organizational, communication, prioritization, and problem-solving skills. 

Schedule and Work Environment

The regular schedule is generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but project needs may require earlier starts, extended hours, weekends, and after-hours availability. The position requires regular travel among the shop, yard, vendors, and active job sites and the ability to work around heavy equipment in varying weather conditions.

 

Reports to: Corporate Shop Manager, servicing the Martins General Superintendent.

Location: Capitol Heights, MD

Compensation: $85,000 to $100,000 annually commensurate with experience
