Responsibilities

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Operates electric, diesel, gasoline, or steam-powered guy-derrick or stiff-leg derrick (mast supported by fixed legs or tripod), to move products, equipment, or materials to and from quarries, storage areas, and processes, or to load and unload trucks or railroad cars.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily pre-operation inspections of crane(s) and associated rigging (oil/fluid levels, tires/tracks, outrigger extension, counterweights, hook blocks) to ensure safe readiness.
  • Read and interpret crane load charts, boom angles, radius, capacities, and determine safe working loads for each lift.
  • Set up crane: place outriggers, cribbing or floats if needed, ensure stable footing/ground conditions, and ensure swing radius protection is installed.
  • Operate crane controls (levers, pedals, buttons) to move boom, hoist, rotate superstructure, swing load, and place materials/equipment precisely as directed (by signalperson, written/verbal instructions, or rigging crew).
  • Work in coordination with riggers, signal persons, and ground crew to position loads, secure loads, and communicate effectively to avoid hazards.
  • Perform rigging and un-rigging tasks: attach/detach slings, shackles, hooks, check rigging equipment, and inspect for defects.
  • Maintain equipment and do basic maintenance or report mechanical issues: lubrication, cleaning, inspections, log entries, service quality paperwork.
  • Ensure compliance with all site, company, and regulatory safety policies.

Qualifications

 

Position Requirements:

 

  • Valid certification from an accredited crane operator testing organization covering the type of crane(s) the operator will use (mobile, rough terrain, crawler, tower, etc.)

  • Ability to read, interpret, and use crane load charts and other technical documentation.

  • At least one year of hands-on crane operating experience 

  • Knowledge of rigging techniques, load securement, signals, ground conditions, outriggers, cribbing, etc.

  • Maintain safe and secure work environment by complying with government standards and legal regulations. Practice good safety habits.
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, and techniques.
  • Follow instructions and meet set standards.
  • Judge distances and slopes accurately.
  • Communicate with supervisors, peers, and/or subordinates.
  • Make decisions based on verifiable standards.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.


Working Conditions:

 

Physical Demands:

  • Position requires physically demanding work in field conditions.
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, and crawl for extended periods of time.
  • Possess physical strength to operate heavy and power-driven equipment.
  • Coordinate the use of eyes, hands, arms, and legs fully. Work easily and skillfully with hands.
  • Vision – ability to see details at close range and details at a distance (either naturally or with correction).
  • Lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of machines or vehicles to exact positions.
  • Ability to judge the distance between you and an object, depth perception.
  • Ability to respond to a signal when it appears, reaction time.

Environmental Conditions:

  • May work outside and be exposed to weather.
  • Wear protective or safety equipment, i.e., safety boots/shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and hard hats.
  • May be exposed to high levels of noise, grease, dust, and a variety of substances that are typically associated with a construction site.
  • Work in dusty or dirty surroundings.
